Community Based Mental Health Care in the coastal areas of Alappuzha

2014 - 2015

THE CHALLENGE

Mehac’s focus in this project was on the overall rehabilitation of psychiatric patients through strengthening local public health initiatives including the establishment of a wide network of voluntary groups. The project aimed to provide care to people with acute mental illness, children with learning disabilities and people suffering from substance abuse.

OUR WORK

  • Free mental health care and treatment were provided to patients in the coastal regions of Punnapra, Chettikad, Mararikulam, Arthunkal, Azheekal and Mannancherry in Alappuzha

  • Regular follow-ups and home care visits for the patients were conducted by psychiatric professionals and psycho-social workers 

  • A separate electronic case record was maintained for each patient

  • Beneficiaries from the project’s target groups were equipped with vocational skills that helped them to generate a source of income 

  • Awareness was created among the general public about the need and importance of psychiatric care

  • Provided mental health care for 168 patients

  • Follow ups conducted for 124 patients

  • 59 patients provided home care visits

  • 50 beneficiaries out of 124 vocationally rehabilitated
